17 Fun (Not Cheesy) Ice Breaker Games Your Employees Will Enjoy Asking "How is everyone?" at the beginning of every meeting isn't always the best way to encourage connection and team bonding. Sometimes, you need to take it a step further with an ice breaker. The best ice breakers have the power to strengthen coworker bonds, stimulate better brainstorming sessions, and create an atmosphere of inclusivity. But it's easier said than done, and the wrong ice breaker questions can lead to awkwardness or even increased tension. To get the most value out of your team bonding moments, we've compiled a list of the best ice breaker games for the workplace. Next time you get together with your team, use one of these games instead of asking "How is everyone", and you're sure to hear some better, more insightful responses than "I'm good." Ice Breakers for Meetings 1. One Word Game The One Word ice breaker allows you to provide initial context into a meeting's topic, and get everyone in the right mindset for discussion. To play, you'll want to divide meeting participants into smaller groups. Then, tell them to think for a minute or two, and then share with their group one word that describes X. For instance, let's say you're leading a meeting on culture. Tell the groups to describe work culture, or your office culture in particular, in one word. Once they've shared with their groups, you can invite them to share their word with the entire...

HubSpot's Management & Leadership Development Expert Shares Tips for Staying Productive When You Work From Home One of the best training sessions I've attended for my career was the PeopleFuel®️ program by The Energy Project at HubSpot. Here, I learned that to be most productive at work, I needed to manage my energy, not my time. The training was led by Nick Congelosi, HubSpot's Management and Leadership Development Head. His team is responsible for overseeing global leadership development across HubSpot with workshops, certifications, and trainings like PeopleFuel®️. When I left that workshop, I felt confident that I could revitalize my work day. That's why I decided to grab a virtual coffee with Congelosi and learn all about his best tips for staying productive when you work from home. Below, let's review Congelosi's remote work productivity tips, how to stay productive during remote meetings, and best practices for running a productive remote training session. 1. Place a side table next to your desk. Have you ever worked on a cluttered desk? I know I have, and that's how I know how distracting it can be. To help you stay focused during your day, Congelosi recommends placing a side table next to your desk about an arm's length away. You can place your notebook and to-do list on this table, so whatever you're working on is the only thing on your desk. If it's your computer, only have one tab open (or however many you actually need to get that...

How to Pass a Video Interview in Just 7 Steps Congratulations! If you've landed on this post, it's likely that your resume has impressed the hiring manager(s) at the company you're applying to work for, and you've now been invited to interview. That's a huge accomplishment. There's just one catch — the interview is taking place over a video call, and you've never been in this position before. How do you complete a video interview? And, more than that, how do you pass one? Never fear, we’ll go over all of that below. If you're looking for video interview tips, tricks, and best practices — or just want to know what in the world an automated interview is — you've come to the right place. Passing Video Interviews When you go into your video interview, what should you do to pass? How should you prepare? Above all else, prepare like you would for a traditional interview. Video interviews are meant to be an accessible alternative for a traditional interview. Keeping that in mind will help you get into the right mindset. This is your moment to really sell yourself to the interviewer, and put a personality behind your amazing resume. In fact, going beyond your resume is what impresses one of HubSpot's senior recruiters, Shavon Bell. She says, "When recruiting senior talent, I look for the story beyond the resume. I recognize it can be challenging for a senior leader to fit all of their experience into a...

How to Create a Remote Work Schedule that Works for You Whether you're a new or experienced remote employee, you've probably realized how hard it can be to stay on a proper schedule. In the morning, you might wake up drowsy with no commute or morning team chats to put you in the work mindset. Then, when you finally feel like you're on a roll and about to get everything on your to-do list done, you might look out the window, realize how dark it is, and discover that you've worked straight through dinner. At HubSpot, where we have a fleet of over 300 full-time remote employees, we hear about the above scenario a lot. And, we've also seen that remote workers across companies share the same struggles. Although the schedule mishap I noted above is fairly common, you definitely don't want it to become a regular part of your lifestyle. While working late at night occasionally can help you get ahead in your career, doing so regularly can harm your mental health, happiness at work, and your work-life balance. When it comes to remote work, the stakes of poor scheduling impacting you might be even higher. Research shows that remote employees tend to work longer hours than in-office employees. Remote work can also result in feelings of disconnection, isolation, and loneliness. If you've fallen for numerous scheduling traps as a remote marketer, it doesn't mean you're a bad employee or going downhill in your career. A scheduling mishap...

How to Conduct Successful Remote Interviews, According to HubSpot's Recruitment Coordinator For your business to thrive, it's undeniably critical you set up a process for conducting effective interviews — and, in 2020, it's equally vital you create a comprehensive virtual interview strategy, as well. As a Program Coordinator on HubSpot's Recruiting Operations Team, I'm familiar with the struggles of creating a cohesive remote interview experience. But, as HubSpot continues to grow globally, I also know how important it is to create a scalable remote candidate interviewing process. Plus, at HubSpot, we have a strong commitment to global-first and remote inclusion — so further developing our remote interview practices only makes sense. While there's no "secret sauce" to remote interviewing, we've iterated on a process that helps both candidates and interviewers have strong, purposeful conversations virtually. Here, I'm going to tell you about the best practices we've learned as a result of listening to both candidate and interviewer feedback, so you can learn how to create your own powerful virtual recruitment process in 2020. 1. Be human, and keep the personal touch. While it’s a bit harder to make a personal connection when interviewing remotely, putting in the extra effort can be the difference between an average and remarkable candidate experience. There are many ways to do this, but some efforts our candidates are loving are: Providing 15-minute prep calls with recruiters if candidates are nervous about interviewing remotely. We want to set up candidates for success, so having...

How Slack’s VP Aligns His Remote Teams and Encourages Cross-department Collaboration

How Slack’s VP Aligns His Remote Teams and Encourages Cross-department Collaboration In 2020, working remotely is now more popular than ever. In fact, over 60% of U.S. employees between the ages of 22 and 65 say they work remotely at least occasionally — and 99% of people would choose to work remotely, at least part-time, if they could. As a fellow part-time remote employee (I typically work from home two days a week), I can understand the benefits. For instance, I find I get the most 'heads down' work done during those two days. Without the opportunity for kitchen chats, friendly debates with my desk-mates on the recent Cats movie, and hour-long team lunches, I'm incredibly productive. Of course, there are plenty of challenges that come with remote work, as well. To name a few: awkward pauses during meetings when my computer freezes, an inability to have off-the-cuff brainstorming conversations with colleagues, and the lack of random check-ins from people around the office. These challenges, while legitimate, become easier to manage with online communication tools like Zoom and Slack. Which brings me to my point: if there's anyone I'd imagine could handle remote challenges with ease, it's Brad Armstrong, the Vice President of Business and Corporate Development at Slack, one of the world's most popular workplace messaging platforms (the tool is already widely used at HubSpot, as well as major brands like IBM, Target, and Cole Haan). At Slack, Armstrong is responsible for partnerships, alliances, the Slack Fund, and...

Well, that myth is both false and incredibly misleading. In fact, research shows that the more passionate you are about a job, the more work you'll actually do. The truth is, a successful career takes time, initiative, and hours of hard work. And, while some companies enable employees to successfully execute on their roles within 40 hours each week, you'll occasionally need to work later or longer to excel at other organizations When you think you have the perfect job, you might tell yourself, "I clock in 70 hours a week because I'm doing what I love," or "The family dinners I'm missing will be worth it in the long run." But, while your role might not "feel" like a job, working long hours without making time for yourself eventually takes a major toll. In fact, research shows that throwing yourself into work too heavily could cause stress, burnout, and -- commonly -- a lonely personal life. Yes -- Managers value employees who take initiative and put in extra effort when needed. However, your personal life is important to your physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. So, how do you continue to excel in your career while making time for yourself and your loved ones? The truth is, there's no simple trick to achieving an ideal work-life balance. But, luckily, there...

Remote Smarketing 101: How to Align Distributed Marketing and Sales Teams To create the optimal customer experience, it's undeniably critical your sales and marketing teams are well-aligned. If you don't, your prospects will suffer. For instance, imagine this: your prospect has been researching a new video conferencing tool for weeks. She's finally found one company she's extremely interested in — yours. Before calling a sales rep, your prospect decides to read numerous blog posts on your website. She also downloads an ebook, watches your company's YouTube videos, and even chats in a few of your community forums. Once your marketing materials have convinced her your product could be a good fit, she decides to call one of your company's sales rep. Unfortunately, the sales rep has no background knowledge on the content with which the prospect has already interacted. The sales rep begins a generic introductory sales pitch, not realizing your prospect is almost ready to buy — she just has a few final questions. This results in a less-than-ideal user experience for your prospect, who won't feel valued as someone who's been interacting with your brand's content for weeks already. Additionally, it isn't an ideal experience for your company's sales or marketing teams, either. If the sales rep was aware of the content with which the prospect has interacted, they'd have an easier time connecting with the prospect and understanding her needs upfront. Ultimately, well-aligned sales and marketing teams have a major impact on your business' bottom...
